The Story
This piece holds a special place in my heart. In the summer of 2024, I had the privilege of accompanying my husband to Oxford, UK, where he presented a paper at a conference. At the base of our hotel was a charming pub, the Morse Bar. For any British television fans, this is the very pub that author Colin Dexter spent time writing many of his famous books from the Inspector Morse series. After a long day of discovering this history-drenched town, my husband and I headed to the pub, tucked into our street food takeout, and ordered a beer. As the bartender passed me this beautifully shaped bottle, I was inspired. I had never seen anything like it. He could tell that I loved it so much that he wrapped it in cellophane for me to take home.
Back in Missouri, that same bottle found a second life holding sunflowers from our backyard ā and inspired this painting. Sunflowers and Oxford celebrates the poetry of simple things: shared moments, sentimental places, and the joy that connects them.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, the work is built through expressive, layered brushstrokes that give the surface a tactile, painterly texture reminiscent of plein-air Impressionist studies. Confident strokes and subtle color shifts capture the movement of petals and leaves, allowing the hand of the artist to remain visible throughout the piece.
A lively palette of warm yellows, deep olive greens, and soft botanical greens creates a sense of sunlight and freshness, while the pale bottle anchors the composition with quiet elegance. The swirling background brushwork adds a sense of gentle motion, evoking the feeling of a warm afternoon.
In a home, business, or shall I venture a cozy wood-panelled bar, this painting brings a bright yet grounded presence ā perfect for cozy areas where light and conversation gather. Its cheerful palette and intimate story invite viewers to pause and remember their own meaningful places and moments.
